The Ubuntu repo has version 0.16, while the current version is 2.5. It’s really out of date and does not work properly.
It took me quite some time to figure out why my newly added metrics were not showing up in the data. I was doing everything right. All I had to do was download the current version from https://prometheus.io/download/ and like magic, everything started working.

You can use the PPA, which is up to date.
